MazG is a NTP and dNTP pyrophosphohydrolase, and at least in Thermotoga it is a pyrophosphatase.

Although it sounds like a Nudix protein, it is not essential, deletion is not mutagenic,
and 2-hybrid studies suggest an interaction with Era GTPase. In addition, it's substrates seem
to be the canonical nucleotides, not analogs.

This subsystem exists only due to its broad distribution
